Buying a commercial mixer or dough rounder on eBay: is it safe?
A $3,000 mixer is a big purchase from someone you've never met. Here's what eBay actually protects, what it doesn't, how to spread the cost, and the checks we'd make before buying from anyone, including us.
Who’s behind this: the team at TheLoveOfDough, the eBay store that sells these Sunmix machines. Links to eBay go to our own listings.
Short answer: paying through eBay checkout gives you protections a wire transfer, a classified ad or an unknown website can't. eBay keeps your card details from the seller. On listings that show the eBay Money Back Guarantee badge, you get your money back if the machine doesn't arrive, arrives damaged or isn't as described. And you can spread the cost with Klarna or PayPal Credit. The catches: always pay through eBay, check the badge and return policy on the listing, and inspect freight deliveries before the driver leaves.
Why eBay instead of a wire transfer or a classified ad
When you buy from a seller you don't know, how you pay decides what happens if something goes wrong. Compare the options:
| How you pay | If something goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Wire or bank transfer to a seller's website | The FTC compares wiring money to sending cash: once it's gone, you usually can't get it back. |
| Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist | Facebook's Purchase Protection doesn't cover local pickups or deals made over Messenger. Craigslist tells you to deal locally and face-to-face, which isn't realistic for a 66–309 lb machine shipped across the country. |
| eBay checkout | eBay handles the payment, doesn't share your card details with the seller, and on listings with the Money Back Guarantee badge, steps in if the item doesn't arrive or isn't as described. |
One rule matters more than any other: pay only through eBay checkout. eBay doesn't allow sellers to offer deals outside eBay, and if any part of your payment happens off eBay, by bank transfer, cash, money order or "escrow", you lose eBay's protection.
The eBay Money Back Guarantee, in plain English
When it applies, it covers three things: the item didn't arrive, it arrived faulty or damaged, or it doesn't match the listing. The refund includes the full price and the original shipping.
- Deadlines: report a missing item within 30 days after the estimated delivery date. Report a damaged or not-as-described item within 30 days of delivery, or by the end of the seller's return window if that's longer. That works even if the seller doesn't accept returns.
- How it works: you open a request on eBay, the seller has 3 business days to respond, and if it isn't resolved you ask eBay to step in. Either side can appeal eBay's decision within 30 days.
- Covered payment methods: credit and debit cards, PayPal, PayPal Credit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo and Klarna, among others, as long as you pay through eBay checkout.
The honest caveat. eBay's policy lists "industrial equipment and heavy machinery" as excluded, and handles that under a separate program, Business Equipment Purchase Protection. eBay doesn't publish exactly which listings fall where. So check for the Money Back Guarantee badge on the listing itself. Our mixer and rounder listings showed it when we checked in October 2026.
The guarantee also doesn't cover a delivery you refused, shipping you arranged yourself (including freight forwarders), or a wrong address you gave.
Paying over time
- Klarna: pay in 4 interest-free payments every two weeks, or finance over 6 to 24 months, on orders up to $30,000. It needs approval, and the rate depends on your credit. Each listing shows an estimated monthly payment before you commit.
- PayPal Credit: no interest if you pay the purchase in full within 6 months, on purchases of $149 or more. If you don't, interest is charged from the purchase date, so plan to clear it in time.
- Cards: Visa, Mastercard and Discover. On purchases of $500 or more you can split the payment across two cards. eBay doesn't accept American Express.
For a small pizzeria, spreading a $3,000 mixer over 12 or 24 months can make more sense than draining cash, as long as the rate you're offered makes sense for your business.
Sales tax, and tax-exempt businesses
In most states, eBay collects and pays the sales tax for you, based on your shipping address. Businesses with a valid exemption, such as resellers, charities or government buyers, can apply through eBay's tax exemption program by uploading their certificate; allow about 10 business days. Whether a restaurant buying equipment for its own use is exempt depends on your state, so check with your accountant.
Check the seller before you buy, including us
- Feedback: the percentage next to the seller's name, the number of ratings, and the detailed star ratings for description accuracy, communication and shipping.
- The listing basics: new or used, where it ships from, the delivery estimate and whether delivery is included. Ours are new Sunmix machines, shipped from Florida with delivery included in the price.
- The return policy, shown on every listing under shipping and returns. Ours currently say 30-day returns, with the buyer paying return shipping. On a heavy machine return freight isn't cheap, so ask questions before you buy rather than after.
- Voltage and plug: make sure the machine is the US version for your outlet. Our 6, 10 and 15 kg mixers and both Moon rounders run on a regular 110V outlet; the Easy 20 and Smart 40 need 220V.
- Ask through eBay messages, so there's a record. A seller who asks you to email, text or pay somewhere else is a red flag.
- Make an offer on listings that allow it. You can make up to 3 offers; the seller has 24 hours to respond, and the item stays available to others until you pay.
- Read protection plans carefully. eBay sometimes offers a third-party protection plan at checkout. The provider of the plans we've seen offered says they don't cover commercial use, so if the machine is for a business, don't count on one.
When the freight truck arrives
- Be there and sign. eBay requires signature confirmation on orders of $750 or more.
- Inspect the crate before the driver leaves. If anything looks crushed, torn or wet, write it on the delivery receipt and take photos.
- Don't refuse the delivery. eBay says to accept it and then report the damage; a refused delivery isn't covered.
- Unpack and check within a few days. Carriers have short deadlines for hidden damage; Estes, for example, asks for notice within five days. Keep the packaging until you're sure.
- Report it on eBay with photos, as an item that arrived damaged.
Why we sell on eBay
We could run our own checkout. We sell on eBay because it's the place where a pizzeria owner in another state can buy a $3,000 machine from people they've never met, and still be protected. You get eBay's checkout and financing; we get to focus on what we know: helping you pick the right machine. Use this site to choose, then check the listing for yourself.

Questions people ask
Is it safe to buy a commercial mixer on eBay?
It's one of the safer ways to buy from a seller you don't know, as long as you pay through eBay checkout. eBay keeps your card details from the seller, and listings that show the eBay Money Back Guarantee badge let you get your money back if the item doesn't arrive, arrives damaged or isn't as described. Check the seller's feedback, the badge and the return policy on the listing first.
Does the eBay Money Back Guarantee cover restaurant equipment?
It depends on the listing. eBay's policy excludes industrial equipment and heavy machinery, which it handles under a separate Business Equipment Purchase Protection program. Many restaurant equipment listings, including ours as of October 2026, show the Money Back Guarantee badge, so look for the badge on the listing you're buying.
Can I finance a spiral mixer on eBay?
Yes, subject to approval. At eBay checkout you can use Klarna (pay in 4 interest-free payments, or financing over 6 to 24 months on orders up to $30,000) or PayPal Credit (no interest if paid in full within 6 months on purchases of $149 or more). Rates and terms depend on your credit.
Does eBay charge sales tax on restaurant equipment?
In most states, yes: eBay collects and remits sales tax based on your shipping address. Businesses with a valid exemption, such as resellers, can apply through eBay's tax exemption program, which takes about 10 business days. Whether a restaurant buying for its own use is exempt depends on your state.
What should I do if my mixer arrives damaged?
Accept the delivery, note any visible damage on the carrier's delivery receipt, take photos and keep the packaging. Then open a request on eBay saying the item arrived damaged, with photos. Don't refuse the delivery: eBay doesn't cover refused deliveries.
